Meet Sam!

Sam is coming up on 3 years old and seems to be some kind of Pit Bull/Bully mixed with Border Collie. He is a healthy 65 lbs and thinks he is the luckiest dog alive! He’s super sweet and cuddly and just wants to be an oversized lap dog.

Sam came to the rescue from a severe neglect/abusive home, he was chained up outside for 1.5 years in all kinds of weather. During this time, his collar was never adjusted so it became embedded in his neck, he has healed and his fur has started to grow back, but he will forever have some scarring and cellulitis in the area. He is as sweet as can be, but he does not know many commands besides his name and sit. We’ve been working with him to stop jumping and barking but he will need some dedicated training to get him up to speed. He also should never be leashed on a collar, he still shows sensitivity any time he feels pressure on his neck, including the backside. He does fine in a harness and can keep the one he’s been wearing during his foster stay.

Sam also has a healed injury on his back left foot from being hit by a car, and he can move and run just as well as any other dog, but he definitely exhibits some stiffness in that leg, so he would do better as an active companion as opposed to a sport dog.

Sam still loves to be outside, but should never be chained up again, so he will only go to a home with a fully fenced yard. He is respectful of humans, but tends to bully smaller dogs for treats/toys, so he would do better in a home with medium-large dogs and older children. He has never shown any signs of aggression, but flinches any time there is too quick movement, so just needs a calm and understanding family. He does not do well with small animals like cats or ducks.

Overall Sam is just a sweetheart looking for his forever home. He loves treats, snuggling on the couch, and getting spoiled. He would be a good introduction to the Border Collie breed since he has all the intelligence but half of the energy. He’s an extremely friendly boy and makes friends everywhere he goes, both in dogs and humans!
