Meet Sam!
Sam is a real sweetheart of a dog who found himself in rescue after a concerned dog-lover persuaded his owner to let him off the chain and surrender him to us. It took several months for him to fully heal from an embedded collar injury, but he’s now a healthy, happy dog.
Sam looks a bit like a border collie, but DNA results showed 21 different breeds. More than a third of his profile is from herding breeds, but mostly he’s a mutt–in the best possible way. He’s healthy, even-tempered and a delight to have in the house. Sam has great house manners and is solidly house trained and crate trained. He has a great recall in the back yard and knows basic commands. He would learn more—enthusiastically! — for treats.
Sam is great with people and his favorite thing is to get loved on. He has been a perfect gentleman in all sorts of situations, from his vet exam to chatting with a work crew next to their big trucks. He is fine with most other dogs but needs a careful introduction. Two years on a chain will make even a sweetie like Sam a little reactive. However, since he’s been in rescue he has lived with both male and female dogs and does well once he knows them. When seeing an unfamiliar dog, he will stare and pull on the leash, but he listens very well and with gentle encouragement will bring his focus back to his people. He shows no reaction to cars, delivery trucks, bicycles, joggers, etc. He’s okay with the indoor cat in his foster home, but if a cat runs, he will chase. His arch enemies are the squirrels that dart around outside and in a prior foster home he was overly interested in the ducks. However, he’s been good about leaving any of them alone with a “Leave it” command.
Sam would be a great family dog but may be too solid and bouncy for young children. Another dog for exercise and companionship would be great but is not required. We are looking for a home for Sam with a yard with a physical fence. He would also be a great jogging partner—he does better at a brisk walk or slow jog than a leisurely stroll. Between walks he is a perfect couch potato.
If you are the perfect forever home for Sam, please fill out an application and contact her foster parents at cathy.kinzie@verizon.net. BRBCR’s approval process includes phone interviews, reference checks, and a home visit prior to meeting a foster dog. Approved applicants must meet at the foster dog’s location. Every adoption begins with a 2-week trial period.
Sam’s adoption fee is $300.
