Dixianna is a beautiful girl about 2 years old. She is super sweet and wants to be close to 'her person' at all times (unless there's a pesky squirrel to chase, of course). Dixianna was picked up as a stray in Buckingham County, VA. She was obviously pregnant, so we pulled her from the shelter as quickly as possible and into a foster home. Dixianna had 9 puppies on May 31st. All of the puppies have now found great homes, and mama is ready to find her special forever home too!
We were so curious to find out Dixianna's breed mix since she was having puppies, so we did a DNA panel and the results told us that her mix is mostly Labrador Retriever with strong influences of Border Collie, Beagle, and American Staffordshire Terrier.
Dixianna is now a healthy young dog, however she is still underweight after weaning her puppies. We do not know her history before she came into BRBCR's care, but she went through her pregnancy and nursed her puppies while battling giardia and erlichia. She is clear of all that now and her foster mom is working on bringing her weight back to where it should be.
Dixianna is a high-energy, athletic dog, but she will also settle nicely. She is learning good walking on-leash manners, and whoever adopts her will need to continue training this. Her natural tendency is to walk at a quick pace, so if you want a leisurely walk, she will pull strongly. With consistent reminders and positive training methods, she will relax and slow her pace down. She would also be a good jogging partner if you're looking for a dog who likes to cover ground at a nice, rolling pace.
Water! Dixianna loves walking and wading in creeks! She would also be an excellent hiking partner.
Dixianna has a high prey drive with a nose for scents and would do best in a home that has a yard with a high fence, if she were to have free time off-leash. She also is very food-motivated and will magically appear on top of any counter to carefully hunt for a morsel of food. With a positive and confidence-building approach to training, Dixianna might excel at barn hunts or nose-work.
Dixianna is still learning to keep her front feet on the floor. Due to her tendency to be overly enthusiastic with jumping up and mouthiness when interacting with her family, children younger than 12 would not be a happy match with her. She would be fine if her forever home had doggy siblings, but not kitty siblings.
Dixianna is housebroken, crate-trained, and travels well in a car (especially in a covered crate). She is spayed and up to date on vaccinations and preventatives.
