2018 A-P

NAME: Sophie
BREED: Border Collie
GENDER: Spayed Female
DOB: 2016
WEIGHT: 40 lbs
COAT: Rough
COLOR: Tri-color
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active Companion
LOCATION: Buckingham, VA

On 8/10/2018, Sophie was pulled from the Buckingham County Animal Control Shelter with only an approximate age -- 1 1/2 to 2 years -- and no vet history. She had changed hands along with another dog at a livestock auction, but once they were released at their new owner's farm, he was unable to catch them and ended up calling Animal Control for help. Sophie was trapped first and was surrendered to the County pound where happily, on a routine visit, a BRBCR volunteer found her.

Before coming to BRBCR, she was almost certainly an outside dog, so Sophie still has lots to learn, but she's a sweet, lovable, happy girl, bright and eager to please. Her ideal adopter would have experience and interest in some kind of training -- obedience, trick, agility, barn hunt, ? (she has not been tested on sheep, but it might be worth a try) -- and probably also a dog buddy or two to give her the security of a pack. Wherever she goes, she would benefit -- at least at first -- from a fairly structured environment with plenty of opportunities for mental and physical exercise

Sophie is now fully crate trained and has been working on supervised house privileges. If allowed to amuse herself, however, she can be destructive -- outdoors, she enjoys playing with the other dogs, but will sometimes dig and has shortened a tarp and pruned some shrubbery; indoors, appropriate chew toys are a must. A fenced exercise area is great for her -- she has never tried to escape her foster's fencing. Leash chewing, however, has been an issue, so a chain lead is important for her safety on walks. She is sometimes anxious around strange dogs, mainly small breeds (no aggression, she just hides), but she loves people and gets along very well with the resident BCs, Maremma, and cats in her foster home. She can be silly and excitable -- her default response to most stimuli is kangaroo bouncing and full-body wagging -- but she is very food and praise motivated and loves clicker training. She very quickly learned Sit, Lie Down, and Touch (for a target stick).

If you're ready to be Sophie's next teacher, she's ready for you!

All potential adopters are required to have a home visit prior to placement of one of our rescues. Sophie's adoption fee is $300, and we offer a two-week trial period when you adopt one of our dogs.

Thank you for considering a rescue!

Sophie's adoption is pending.
