Ruby is a sweet (but untrained), young Aussie girl. She landed in the shelter as a stray so we do not know her background. The vet has estimated her age as 10-12 months. She is currently about 30 lbs so she shouldn't get much bigger or heavier.
Although Ruby is at the stage of an "untrained and obnoxious puppy" in an adult body, she is very food-motivated and has shown me she is happy to train using positive methods. She is a blank slate, and I think that she has the potential to enjoy agility, rally or one of the other dog sports – and definitely hiking. She has a lot of energy, and it should be channeled into positive activities.
Ruby can be a bit mouthy/nippy when excited. She is also prone to barking until she understands what is going on – new person or unexpected sound. She is fearful (barking) of new people, but when she knows that the new person can give her treats, she usually calms down. Because of her sound reactivity, she may not do well in an urban environment.
Ruby is a rough and tumble wrestler and plays bitey games with other dogs. If she gets too rough, she will back off when the other dog growls or barks at her, but she will definitely push the envelope with rough play if allowed. I think she would love a canine playmate with a similar play style in her new home, but she might be OK as an only dog too. She is very interested in cats and will chase if they run, but if the cats are dog-savvy and stand up to her nosing them (by swatting at her), she will back off.
In summary, Ruby is not for the novice dog owner or a home with children less than 10-12 years old. Her new owner(s) should be prepared to keep her mind and body occupied. Positive reinforcement training works wonderfully with her and is highly recommended. Patience will be needed to help her be less reactive to people and sounds, but I have already seen a slight improvement in the few days she has been here.
More info: Ruby is crate-trained. Rides well in a crate in the car. Definitely needs work on leash walking manners. She can be protective of her toy and food with other dogs, but we are working on it. She is house trained IF you remember to walk her at regular intervals. She enjoys a cuddle, but gets very excited at first to be able to cuddle, then eventually will calm down. Spayed and vaccinated and Heartworm negative and negative for tick-born diseases.
All potential adopters are required to have a home visit prior to placement of one of our rescues. Ruby's adoption fee is $300, and we offer a two-week trial period when you adopt one of our dogs.
Thank you for considering a rescue!
